Online Psychotherapy or In-Person Psychotherapy: Which Is the Better Choice for You?

Online Psychotherapy or In-Person Psychotherapy: Which Is the Better Choice for You?

One of the first questions I receive from individuals considering entering the psychotherapeutic process is: Which format of work is best for me?

For years, traditionally visiting a counseling center and meeting in person was the sole standard. However, the modern way of life and technological advancements have led to the widespread adoption of online psychotherapy. If you are wavering between these two options, below I provide answers to five of the most common questions and doubts.

1. Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

The short answer is: yes.

Numerous scientific studies confirm that online psychotherapy can be just as effective as traditional, in-person work. From my experience so far, successful therapeutic work and a deep connection can most definitely be achieved through a screen.

The choice of format is more a matter of personal preference, needs, and lifestyle. Both formats have their specific pros and cons, but the quality of the therapeutic relationship and progress in the process do not have to suffer if you choose online work.

2. Why do people most commonly choose online psychotherapy?

Sometimes online psychotherapy is the only option, for instance, when clients live in smaller towns or abroad, where they cannot easily access adequate professional help in their native language or local area.

However, geographical distance is not the only reason. Online work provides exceptional flexibility:

  • Saves time, as there is no commuting or getting stuck in traffic.
  • Allows for sessions from various locations (from home, the office, or while traveling).

Additionally, choosing online psychotherapy can make taking that first step toward starting therapy easier. For many people, entering an unfamiliar space can cause added discomfort. An online session reduces that pressure and allows one to enter the process from the safety of their own space.

3. What situations can pose a challenge in online work, and how are they resolved?

The most common challenges in online psychotherapy are technical in nature, such as a dropped connection, audio cutouts, or line disruptions.

It is completely normal for these things to happen, even with the best planning and preparation. When technical disruptions occur, standard practice is to reach out to the client via text message to clarify what happened and agree on the next steps. Technical issues rarely interfere with the continuity of the process if clear agreements are established from the very beginning.

4. How important is the physical space you are in?

The physical space plays an important role because it is crucial that you feel safe, comfortable, and have complete privacy during the session.

Some individuals feel more comfortable in a psychotherapist's office because it provides a physical and mental distance from daily obligations, family, or sources of stress at home.

On the other hand, many clients feel safer, more relaxed, and more open during online therapy because they are in their own familiar and secure environment.

Both options are legitimate and depend on your current stage of life and needs.

5. Can in-person psychotherapy and online work be combined?

Psychotherapy should serve you, so clients can listen to their needs and combine formats flexibly. You can choose to come in person when you feel you need physical contact, focus, and a separate space, and switch to an online format when you need convenience, flexibility, or when you are traveling.

There is no "wrong" choice. The most important thing is to choose the format that currently provides you with the greatest sense of safety, continuity, and comfort.
